"There’s most certainly a troubling pattern to his work that features a lack of non-white, non-straight characters. " I really don't understand this point of view. Does every film (or book) need to be "diverse" or multicultural? Many of Scorcese's films focus on particular subcultures. Woody Allen is another example. I get that he's problematic on many levels, but the fact that his best 70s films are mainly about white, upper middle class New Yorkers doesn't discredit him. That was his niche. Another New York based director, Spike Lee, has done some great films about Black subcultures. I don't think artists should have to check boxes to fulfill certain quotas.
