Joe Rogan and Dragons: Why is The Left Losing the Meme War?

A few weeks ago, a host on the liberal TV show The View made a derogatory remark about podcaster Joe Rogan, dismissing him as someone who “believes in dragons.” Rogan responded by putting “Believes in Dragons” on his X profile.

I don’t know the exact context, as I don’t watch The View and have only heard snippets of Rogan (I like him but my attention span isn’t made for 2+ hour interviews). Perhaps one of Rogan’s fringier guests brought up dragons and Rogan failed to contradict him. Regardless, this little incident epitomizes a few things about contemporary culture. For one, it’s a perfect example of how “the left” is getting left behind when it comes to what we might call the meme war.

The usage of “memes” has changed a little over the years. The term, coined by Richard Dawkins, originally meant any idea, movement, or belief system that spreads quickly around society. Dawkins called it a “unit of cultural transmission,” the cultural equivalent of a virus. The latter fits perfectly with how “viral” is now used to talk about fast-spreading videos or other online content.
