You’ve probably heard the advice “stay hydrated!” a million times by now. Just as popular is “drink more water!” But how is the best way to do this in a busy, expensive, and polluted world? Here are some top hydration solution tips for everyday life.

Is Tap Water Safe?

The quality of tap water varies greatly. Unfortunately, it’s very hard to know without doing your own testing. Even then, you never know about the quality of a particular glass or gallon of water. In general, tap water is not ideal and is likely to contain all kinds of scary contaminants, including heavy metals, plastics, and even pharmaceuticals. Natural sources of water such as springs and wells can also be contaminated by local issues such as lead, arsenic, or bacteria.

Most municipal water supplies are tested regularly and are probably free of deadly contaminants. Even here, though, you never know for sure as we’re seeing more cases such as Flint, Michigan, where there are serious long-term issues. It’s a good idea to check the latest findings in your area or any place you’re visiting. As a rule, tap water is better than nothing if you’re thirsty but not the best choice for the purest water.
